HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): A 16-year-old boy has committed suicide by hanging himself after he failed the university entry test in western Herat province, an official said on Tuesday.

Mohammad Rafique Sherzai, the civil hospital spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the deceased was a student of Fatha High School in Nawabad area of Herat City, the provincial capital.

The boy hanged himself on Monday and was brought to hospital in critical condition, he said. Despite efforts, doctors could not save him.

Separately, a gunman shot dead a woman and injured her spouse in the Engil district on Tuesday, Sherzai said. The incident took place in Karta locality at around 11am. 

Police spokesman Abdul Rauf Ahmadi confirmed the killing of a woman and said the alleged killer had been arrested.
