Infighting leaves ALP commander dead

KANDAHAR/JALALABAD (Pajhwok): An Afghan Local Police (ALP) commander and a member were killed and four others wounded as a result of infighting in southern Kandahar province, officials said on Tuesday.

Kandahar governor’s spokesman Samim Khpalwak told Pajhwok Afghan News the clash left ALP commander Sher Agha along with a member dead and four others wounded in Zheri district.

The clash broke out after a verbal dispute between Agha and another commander named Geran. An investigation team has been sent to the area, the official said.

A Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi said commander Sher Agha and two other ALP members were killed in the infighting — the first of its kind taking place in Kandahar.

Elsewhere, six Taliban militants, including a commander, have been killed in the Haskamina district of eastern Nangarhar province in a US drone strike.

Provincial police spokesman Maj. Hazrat Hussain Mashriqiwal said Taliban commander Abdullah was among six others killed in the drone strike in Gurgurai area on Monday night.

Another two rebels were captured alive during an operation in the area, he said.

A resident of the area, Rabbani Shinwari, said some of the militants killed or arrested were involved in closing schools in the district.

Most schools in areas under Taliban control have been closed over the past one week in the Haskamina town. The Taliban commander Aimal, who ordered these schools shut, was among the dead.
