HERAT CITY (Pajhwok):  An Iranian citizen has been detained for allegedly smuggling 20 kilograms of opium in his car in western Herat province, where a traffic accident killed two people and injured six others, officials said on Tuesday.

Police official Col. Faqir Gul Amini told Pajhwok Afghan News the Iranian national wanted to smuggle the opium to Iran through the Islam Qala port. The detainee had concealed the drugs in his vehicle’s seats.

Meanwhile, a woman and a child were killed and six others sustained injuries when a passenger vehicle overturned on the Herat-Islam Qala highway, the civil hospital chief said.

Mohammad Raffiq Shirzai told Pajhwok Afghan News the incident happened in Lakhshak area on the highway in the morning. He said three of the wounded persons were in critical condition.
