KABUL (Pajhwok): The Central Statistics Organisation (CSO) on Monday announced the creation of a new joint economic commission assigned with performing economic surveys.
Sher Mohammad Jami, the CSO acting head, complained the private sector had been uncooperative with his organisation, thus depriving them of enough data on private firms and their activities.
The new commission, he said, was comprised of representatives from ministries of commerce, finance, economy and the CSO. The panel’s “accurate surveys” would help the government in formulating its economic policies, he said.
Azizullah Faqiri, economic surveys head at the CSO, told Pajhwok Afghan News a national survey for collecting information about companies, industries and economic organisations would be conducted soon.
Atiqullah Nasrat, Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI) head, said the chamber would cooperate and work with the CSO in preparing the flagship document.
He called the lack of enough information about economic developments as a major challenge that needed to be addressed.
Many countries formulated their economic policies on development, industry, commerce and income based on the statistics provided on monthly and yearly basis, he added
ACCI deputy head Khan Jan Alkozai said it was CSO’s responsibility to conduct surveys and that data collected by other departments could be inaccurate that could lead to poor economic decisions.
