Kandaharis want transport fares cut after dip in oil prices

KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Residents of this southern city on Monday asked the government to slash public transport fares and fuel rates on the back of the slump in global oil prices.

“The price of one litre of petrol has dropped to 39 afghanis from the previous 65afs, but no change has come to to the public transport fares,” locals said.

Noor Ahmad, who lives in the first municipal district, said fuel prices had been on the decline over the past one month, but the authorities were yet to bring down the fares.

 “I have a shop in Shorandam area and I hire taxi to go home against 40 afghanis fare which I used to pay earlier as well,” he said. He lamented taxi drivers were refusing to reduce fare despite the major slump in fuel prices in the global market.

Izzatullah, another resident of Kandahar City, also complained transport fares remained constant.

He said earlier buses plying between Kandahar City and the Spin Boldak border town charged 250 afghanis and they continued to charge the same amount despite decreasing fuel prices. He asked the government to adjust fares with fuel prices.
