KABUL (Pajhwok): The Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) chief on Sunday urged President Hamid Karzai not to leave office until his successor was sworn-in.

Earlier, President Karzai has stressed the new president should take oath by September 2.

But later the UN top diplomat in Kabul, Jan Kubis,  informed the president that the vote audit could not be completed until September 11.

Addressing a press conference in Kabul, Abdul Sattar Sadat said if President Karzai left office before his successor was administered oath then it would amount to violation of the Constitution.

He praised the retiring president for his contribution to ensuring a smooth power transfer from one democratically elected government to another.

President Spokesman Aimal Faizi has made it clear that President Karzai would remain in office until his successor was sworn-in.
