KAHOST CITY (Pajhwok): The residents of eastern Khost City on Tuesday accused the municipality of not paying attention to cleanliness and removing garbage — a ubiquitous eyesour — from the main bazaar of the provincial capital.

Muhammad Ayub, a resident of Khost City, told Pajhwok Afghan News that waste was scattered all over the place in the city, causing bad smell and fear of diseases.

It was a prime responsibility of the municipality to conduct a weekly cleanliness drive throughout the city, he said, adding people were ready to cooperate with the muncipality in this regard.

Muhammad Tahir, a shopkeeper, said that water channels close to the city were often inundated because they were full of papers, plastic bags, bottles and other litter.

Daud Shah Makizai, a provincial council member, also held the municipality responsible for failing to keep the city clean. “The Khost Municipality has resources and workers but it does not discharge its duty regularly,” he alleged.

Pajhwok Afghan News repeatedly tried to get version of Khost Municipality officials but they were unwilling to talk on the subject.

Mubarez Zadran, the governor’s spokesman, acknowledged it was the responsibility of the municipality to keep the city clean and uncontaminated.

“The governor has time and again directed the municipality officials to focus on their sanitary work but the department seems unable to discharge its duty,” he recalled.

The Khost Municipality has around 40 workers but they are found absent from their duties most of the time.
