GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): Kidnapped Hajj and Religious Affairs director for southern Ghazni province was found dead in the Syedabad district of central Maidan Wardak province, officials said on Saturday.

Suspected militants abducted Haji Fazl Ahmad on Wednesday along with his two colleagues in Syedabad on the Kabul-Ghazni highway. Ahmad, his driver and a friend, who is a school headmaster, were kidnapped on their way from Ghazni to Kabul.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the abduction, but local officials blamed it on the Taliban.

Shafiq Nang, the Ghazni governor’s spokesman, confirmed the body of Fazl Ahmad had been recovered in Syedabad district, but stopped short of going into details. He said police had reached the area to shift the body to Ghazni City.

Attaullah Khogyani, the Maidan Wardak governor’s spokesman, said the body of the director was found in Dand area on Saturday morning.

He said members of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) had arrived at the scene to help shift the body to Ghazni City.

An investigation was underway to divulge more facts about the incident, he said. Khogyani accused militants of the assassination. However, the Taliban have not yet claimed credit for the murder.

A Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said they had investigated the kidnap-murder incident but failed to determine who were behind it.
