Library, children’s park being set up in Kandahar

KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): A public library and a children’s park are being established in the capital of southern Kandahar province, officials said on Monday.

Kandahar City Mayor Mohammad Omar Omar told Pajhwok Afghan News the library and the park and a parking facility would be established at the old vegetable market.

The old vegetable market was situated in front of the Sari Jamia Masjid and the Mandigag Palace. The market was recently abandoned after a new, large building was erected by the private sector outside the city in Shorandam area.

The mayor said the Ministry of Information and Culture planned to construct a building for the proposed library on a 600 square metres plot of the old market’s land.

He said the municipality would establish a children’s park on a three acres of land and the remaining one acre would be used as a parking facility.

Omar said little recreation facilities were available for children in Kandahar and the need for a well-equipped children’s park was direly felt.

He did not reveal possible costs of the proposed projects, but said their designing and other related works had been done and further information about the projects would be shared with the media once work on them was launched.

Information and Culture Director Dawa Khan Minapal said though a library existed inside his department, but the facility lacked enough space for books and visitors.

He said they looked for a library having a proper and well-equipped building and a suitable environment for study.

He said the Information and Culture Ministry had promised the establishment of such a library, for which the municipality had devoted 600 square metres of land.

Minpal said another public library would be established in the Spin Boldak border town. The library would also have a parking facility.

He said the Kandahar National Museum also needed a well-equipped building and the current governor’s house and municipality buildings would be declared as heritage sites.  The museum would be shifted to one of the buildings, he said.

In this regard, the mayor said seven and a half acres of land had been allotted for the construction of buildings for government departments, including the governor’s house, in the Aino Meena township.
