KABUL (Pajhwok): Some residents on Wednesday alleged the mayor had allowed shops being built on government land to powerful individuals in the capital of central Sar-i-Pul province.

But the mayor said the shops were being constructed temporarily, while the governor distanced himself from the issue.

Locals said 93 shops were being built on the land, which had been allotted for a road project and green belts under the Sar-i-Pul city master plan.

Amanullah, who owns a stall in the area, said the mayor had ordered all stalls removed to construct his own market.

Provincial council chief Asadullah Khurram confirmed the land had been allocated for roads and greenery under the master plan.

“We have informed the mayor several times about the reservations people have about the construction of these shops, but the mayor is yet to come up with a positive reply,” he said.
