SHARAN (Pajhwok): An official on Wednesday urged the Ministry of Education to launch work on newly-approved schools for southeastern Paktika province.

Of the 46 schools approved for Paktika, located near the Pakistan border, 13 are under construction and five others have been built. But work on the rest is yet to be initiated.

Education Director Kochai Zazai told Pajhwok Afghan News that four schools, including a Quran memorisation centre, were being established for girls.

Some girls’ schools in the province have been without proper buildings, with students forced to study in tents. Pupils studying in such an environment were facing numerous problems, he acknowledged.

The director said: “Since technical preparations for most of the 46 schools have already been completed, we request the Ministry of Education to launch work on them as soon as possible.”

Bara Khan, head of the Paktika Students’ Association, said the authorities had promised to build the schools by the end of the last solar year. But the promise was honoured in breach, he lamented.

He added some progress in the education sector had been made in Sharan and a number of districts, but many Paktika schools still remained without buildings, Khan explained.

He argued well-equipped schools played propitious role in students’ education. “And that’s why we want the ministry to construct the schools at the earliest possible.”

Education Department spokesman Kabir Haqmal, meanwhile, promised the projects would be launched soon and funds for them had been allocated. The province has 201 primary, 58 middle and 59 high schools.
