NEW DELHI (PAN): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated President Dr. Ashraf Ghani on his assumption of office, praising the Afghans’ faith in democracy.

On Wednesday, Modi spoke with Ghani over the telephone, lauding his statesmanship and commitment to unity, peace and progress in Afghanistan.

Ghani’s wisdom had enabled the formation of a broad-based and inclusive government, as well as a peaceful political transition, Modi acknowledged.

He also paid tribute to the people and political leaders of Afghanistan for their faith in democracy and the will to prevail over the scourge of violence and terrorism.

Modi expressed his confidence that President Ghani`s expertise, global experience and grassroots knowledge would help him implement his bold agenda of economic reforms and development.

He also hoped President Ghani`s experience would be beneficial for India and the region. He said India would stand with him, as his government moved forward in its efforts to build a stable, peaceful, democratic and prosperous nation.

The prime minister noted India`s relations with Afghanistan had been forged by ancient cultural links and timeless bonds of mutual affection and admiration, which had grown deeper in recent years.

Ghani conveyed his deep sense of appreciation for Prime Minister`s letter of congratulations. He described India as the foundation of Afghanistan`s diplomacy and economic strategy.

He complimented the prime minister on his electoral success and his development vision, which would be beneficial for Afghanistan and the entire region.

Ghani accepted Modi`s invitation to visit India at the earliest opportunity and suggested immediate commencement of dialogue between the two governments, including their security and economic advisors.
