Mosque, Quran burning spark outrage in Ghazni

GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): Dozens of enraged protesters in southern Ghazni province took to the street on Sunday denouncing burring of mosque in the Andar district the other day.

On Saturday night, unidentified gunmen setting mosque on fire, which also left 18 copies of holy Quran burned to ashes in the Salihano locality.

District Police Chief Lutfullah Kamran blamed Taliban for the desecration of the worship place and copies of Quran. Kamran dubbed insurgents as enemies of culture and civilization but the rebels rejected the claim.

“Taliban prompted to set fire to the mosque as the government has recently bought loudspeaker, carpets and other necessities of life for the mosque,” he remarked.

But Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed people of the locality were involved in setting the mosque on fire. He said two tribes had a claim over the mosque’s property, which ended in the torching of the holy place.

He said that Taliban would award severe punishment to those who burned down the mosque.

Khoshal Khan, a protester, said desecreation of religious sites was unacceptable act. The government should identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice, he observed.
