KABUL members on Monday hailed President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai’s resolve to implement laws on powerful individuals and his intention to stay away from obsequious persons.

A day earlier, Ahmadzai said the time had come to fulfill promises held out to the nation one after another.

He also said he was determined to enforcing laws on powerful individuals. “Don’t let me besieged in the palace and fall prey to flatterers. My promise is equal rights for all Afghans,” Ahmadzai told a visiting delegation at his office on Sunday.

His remarks were welcomed by a number of lower house members, saying flatters kept away the former president, Hamid Karzai, from the masses.

Eng. Zakriya, a lawmaker from Kabul, said the president should keep at bay flatterers, who had been deceiving the former president.

He said such self-centered people were against skilled individuals to be appointed. He suggested the president should make the state pillars stronger for reaching his goals and should take every step in consultation with officials of the unity government.

“The people of Afghanistan should realise that generations after generations have missed Amanullah Khan. Ashraf Ghani should be supported so that we miss him for many generations to come.”

Paktika representative Nadar Khan Katawazai said the existence of obsequious persons and non-implementation of laws on the powerful over the past one decade had resulted in a widened gap between the people and the government.

“If there are no flatterers and laws are implemented on all, the distance between the government and the masses can be overcome, which can help end misfortunes and we will have peace and stability,” the lawmaker remarked.

Without naming anyone, Katawazi said: “Hamid Karzai was a good human being and statesman, but he was surrounded by a handful of individuals who did not let others to apprise him of the nation’s plights.”

Similar views were expressed by Kabul MP Shinkai Karokhel and Wolesi Jirga Secretary Syed Ikram.
