KABUL (Pajhwok): Kabul Mayor Muhammad Yunus Nawandesh has submitted his resignation letter to President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, a spokesman for the municipality said on Monday.
Abdul Qadir Arzo said Nawandesh had tendered his resignation to the Presidentail Palace, but had received no response so far. He did not say why the mayor had stood down.
But there have been allegations of corruption and poor performance against the mayor, who was appointed in December 2009 after his predecessor Abdul Ahad Sahibi was accused of graft by the Attorney General’s Office.
Earlier, Wolesi Jirga members had accused Nawandesh of corruption and had demanded his removal. But the mayor hit back at the lawmakers for their involvement in land-grab incidents.
