QALAT (Pajhwok): A new polio case has been detected in southern Zabul province during the current month, a health official said on Monday.

Director of Public Health Dr. Muhammad Tahir told Pajhwok Afghan News the case had been detected in the Kharwaryan area of Qalat, the provincial capital.

Following the detection of the case, he said an extraordinary polio vaccination campaign would be launched in five districts of the province.

He added polio drops would be administered to 36,000 children under five years of age in Safa, Shajoi, Mizan and Shinki districts. The drive would be launched next week.

Governor Muhammad Ashraf Nasiri said children were the leaders of tomorrow and they should be provided with better health facilities. He asked religious leaders, tribal elders and militants to make the campaign a success.

Officials said it was the first polio case detected in Zabul. The governor urged residents to administer polio drops to their children below five years of age.
