KABUL on Thursday rejected reports that the insurgent movement had shifted its political office from Qatar to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Recently, social media said Taliban had closed their political bureau in Doha and had opened a new office in Dubai. But Zabihullah Mujahid, one of the two official spokesmen for the movement, said they rejected the reports as false.

He said the Taliban had no intention to open a new office in the UAE or close the one in Doha. He added such rumours were being circulated by morally corrupt people.

“Whenever and wherever our new office is being opened or we take a political stance, all it will be overt and with our formal address, we don’t believe in mysterious moves and covert acts.”

The Afghan government led by President Ashraf Ghani has recently launched efforts at reviving the stalled peace talks. Some time ago, President Ghani travelled to China and sought Beijing support in the Afghan peace process.

Two days ago, China announced it was ready to mediate between the Afghan government and the Taliban. Ghani, who visited the UAE four days ago, returned home a day earlier.

Meanwhile, Taliban’s former ambassador to Pakistan Abdul Salam Zaeef denied his participation in peace talks in Dubai. He said his name had been mentioned erroneously with regard to the Dubai office.

But he said: “I do not work for any party and am not in contact with anyone about peace talks or politics. I have neither spoken with the UAE government nor with the Afghanistan administration and the Taliban leadership.”

He believed the Taliban would not open their office elsewhere because they had realised sincerity of the Qatari leadership.
