KABUL (Pajhwok): The spokesperson of Paktia governor on Saturday claimed considerable improvement in security and economic situation of the strategically important southeastern Paktia province.

Addressing a well-attended press conference here in Kabul, Rohullah Samon said around 2,000 welfare projects had been implemented in the province following improvement in security situation.

However, locals vehemently rejected Samon’s claim by saying that insurgents groups were still active in some districts of the province.

Taliban have not succeeded in taking a district or an area from security forces. However, sometimes they target innocent people with roadside bombs,” he added.

During the last two years, he said even a single school or clinic could not be closed by Taliban and that security forces had active support of locals.

The spokesman added some 2,000 welfare projects worth $40 million in different sectors of education, electricity and infrastructure had been implemented in Paktia.

Abdullah, a resident of Sayed Karam district told Pajhwok Afghan News that apart from the district capital, Taliban have presence in other areas and were posing a major threat to people.
