SHARAN (Pajhwok): The Afghanistan Natural Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) on Wednesday distributed 352 tonnes of wheat to 3,500 flood-affected families in southeastern Paktika province, an official said.

Last summer flash floods destroyed standing crops and orchards over thousands acres of land in Mata Khan, Yousafkhel, Khairkot, Sara Roza and Omani districts, but caused no casualties.

ANDMA chief Abdul Hadi Hadi said the aid distribution came five months after the devastating floods because their officials had been busy identifying deserving people. He said each affected family received 100 kilograms of wheat.

Mohammad Yaqub, a beneficiary who lives in Omani, criticised ANDMA for the delay in aid distribution despite the fact the affected families were in dire need of it.

He said the100 kilograms of wheat could not compensate the huge losses residents suffered in the floods. “The floods had destroyed our orchards and crops.”

Earlier, some foreign NGOs had also assisted the affected families.
