KABUL is using militant outfits as proxies to counter the Indian military.
The report is a manifestation of growing global acknowledgment of the extent of Pakistan’s involvement in international terrorism, a spokesman for India’s external affairs ministry said
“Pakistan uses proxy forces to hedge against the loss of influence in Afghanistan and to counter India’s superior military,” the Pentagon said in its six-monthly report on the situation in Afghanistan.
Foreign ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin was quoted as saying by the Times of India: “It manifests a growing acknowledgment in the international community of the extent of Pakistan’s involvement in terrorism.”
According to the US department of Defence, Pakistan’s links with rebel groups run counter to public commitment to support Afghan-led reconciliation. Such groups continue to act as the primary irritant in Afghan-Pakistan relations.
About the attack on the Indian consulate in Herat, the Pentagon said it was done just ahead of the swearing-in ceremony for Narendra Modi as new prime minister of India.
