KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani has held a flurry of meetings with several cabinet picks, who may be introduced to the parliament for a vote of confidence on Monday, Pajhwok Afghan News reliably learnt on Saturday.

A government official, requesting not to be named, said Ghani went into talks with the nominees he and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Abdullah Abdullah had already agreed on.

Security institutions’ heads would be introduced to the lower house, Wolesi Jirga, in the first phase. Abdullah had surrendered the defence portfolio to the president, who has proposed the current army chief, Gen. Sher Mohammad Karimi for the slot.

Privy to the overnight huddle, the source revealed that the CEO had nominated Fazal Ahmad Manawi — ex-election commission chairman — and Eng. Arif Noorzai for the interior minister.

Hezb-i-Islami leader Eng. Naseer is tipped as rural development minister, Ghulam Nabi Farahi as minister of border and tribal affairs and Faizullah Zaki minister of information and culture.

Abdullah’s pick for commerce minister is Sardar Mohammad Rahimi while Rahmatullah Nabil has been named as head of the spy service, the National Directorate of Security (NDS).

There has been no word from the government about the agreed Cabinet nominees. Soon after his inauguration more than two months ago, Ghani had said a new Council of Ministers would be unveiled soon.

At the London Conference on Afghanistan on Dec. 7, the president assured world leaders the cabinet picks would be nominated in three to four weeks. The promise has not been honoured so far.
