KABUL (Pajhwok): President Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai and high-ranking officials on Friday discussed the procedure for mayor’s appointment and implementation of the Kabul master plan.

More than 300 people, including representatives of civil society and Kabul Municipality, attended the meeting at the Presidential Palace. Ideas were exchanged on how to ensure maintenance of various sites in the capital.

Divided into19 working committees, the participants held comprehensive discussions on different issues and presented the results to Ahmadzai, a statement from the Presidential Palace said. The recommendations were and approved by the president.

After hearing the recommendations, the president remarked that improving the situation in Kabul was a shared responsibility of the government and the public. He stressed Kabul being the capital city should represent the entire country by embracing religious values and Afghan traditions.

“I’m unhappy with the situation in Kabul and cannot afford to let this continue. The municipality should be a service-oriented institution, not an. It should discharge its duties toward citizens in an efficient way,” the president said, pledging to hold the city fathers accountable.

While stressing the need for infrastructural changes, he said all Afghans, including media professionals, were duty-bound to cooperate with efforts at Kabul’s maintenance. Without public support, the goal could not be achieved, he explained.

Since the big shots did not honour municipal laws, the municipality needs to have clear law-enforcement powers, according to the president, who pledged to convert all city areas into planned sites. Projects like the Sherpur Township should not recur, he warned.
