PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): A prisoner apparently committed suicide by hanging himself at the central jail of northern Baghlan province, an official said on Sunday.
Provincial police chief, Col. Abdul Bashir Rashid, told Pajhwok Afghan News the inmate, Mohammad Nasir, hanged himself late on Saturday night.
Nasir had been sentenced to two years in jail for his criminal activities and torturing people. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, but the attorney office appointed a delegation to investigate the incident.
The victim’s father, Mohammad Asif, alleged his son had intentionally been killed. He said his son was found dead at the jail’s rehabilitation and education centre, where no one could commit suicide or could be killed by someone.
Distraught and bitter, the man asked the authorities concerned to thoroughly investigate the incident. Nasir’s body was handed over to his family at the civil hospital, where relatives did not allow doctors to perform an autopsy.
However, a doctor said strangulation bruises were visible on Nasir’s neck.
