JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Women of eastern Nuristan province have long been facing multiple problems, which the central government has failed to resolve, the provincial women’s affairs director says.
Faizan Nuristani told Pajhwok Afghan News women continued to be subjected to violence, a problem which could not be addressed due to insecurity and presence of rebels.
She lamented the central authorities had not been paying proper attention to female education in Nuristan. After 13 years of the democratic rule, the women of Nuristan remained deprived of basic education, he deplored.
Her department still lacked a proper building, with the government failing to launch initiative to improve living condition of the gender in the province, Nuristani said.
The director said much had been done to empower women in others provinces as compared to Nuristan over the past decade.
Due to insecurity, she said, her department was unable to spread awareness among women about their rights, freedom and social duties and responsibilities.
She urged the new government to work for the development of women in Nuristan, where education for girls needed to be encouraged and violence against them discouraged.
The official said no government official had sincerely worked for Nuristan’s development and women here wanted to live a prosperous life.
Others officials in Nuristan have long been criticising the central government for paying little heed to development activities in Nuristan.
