KABUL (Pajhwok): Vice-President Mohammad Yunus Qanuni and other government officials on Tuesday placed flowers at a monument in Kabul, marking the beginning of the Martyrs Week and the 13th anniversary of Ahmad Shah Massoud’s martyrdom.

Massoud, the famous jihadi commander, was assassinated in the Khwaja Bahauddin district of Takhar province on September 9, 2001. In 1992, he was appointed as minister of defense under the Peshawar Accord, a position he held until 2001.

Flanked by Defence Minister Gen. Bismillah Mohammadi and other high-ranking government officials, Qanuni said the Martyrs Week was being observed to pay tributes to jihadi heroes from different Afghan ethnic groups.

“I’m certain that our valiant security forces that have long been defending the motherland will eventually rid Afghanistan of the war imposed on it and the scourge of terrorism,” the vice-president remarked.

“Rising above ethnic differences and regional biases, we should work together to promote national unity, respect Afghan values and honour our heroes,” Qanuni said.

Speaking on the occasion, Ahmad Zia Massoud, a brother of Massoud, said: “If we really want to follow our heroes and martyrs, we have to accept certain things as our national and religious responsibility.”

He explained one of those objectives was the establishment of an inclusive national government that represented all ethnic groups of Afghanistan and protected their interests. Every Afghan should endeavor to contribute to political stability and security, he stressed.

“God willing, we will soon witness a national unity government, which will shape the political destiny of the people,” said the former vice-president, a supporter of presidential runner Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai.
