KABUL (HPC) chief Burhanuddin Rabbani’s martyrdom was observed with the laying of a floral wreath on his grave in Kabul on Saturday.
Rabbani was assassinated at his residence in Wazir Akbar Khan along with three members of the peace panel by a suicide bomber posing as a Taliban emissary. He remained president from 1992 to 1996.
The National Directorate of Security (NDS) and the Ministry of Interior announced the suicide attacker was a Pakistani national and the plot was hatched in Quetta.
Current HPC chief and Rabbani’s son, Salahuddin Rabbani, Vice-President Mohammad Yunus Qanuni and Minister of Defense Bismillah Mohammadi were present at the ceremony.
A number of senior government officials, members of HPC, presidential candidate Dr. Abdullah and his choices for vice-president also participated. A closed holiday, the day was observed in Kabul and several provinces.
