CHARIKAR with northern provinces, has been closed for traffic following heavy snowfalls, an official said on Monday.
Gen. Rajab Ali, the highway maintenance commander, told Pajhwok Afghan New the busy road had been closed against traffic since last night when heavy snowfall and snowstorm hit the route. The snowstorm continued until Monday afternoon.
He said the road would remain closed until Wednesday because up to ten avalanches had buried the northern Salang part of the highway. Rajab Ali said the highway had been closed for safety of passengers.
He said vehicles left stranded in the snow-hit areas had been moved to safety and those standing on both sides of the tunnel would be allowed movement after the threat of more avalanches had subsided.
Traffic official in Jablus Siraj district, Naeemullah, said the heavy snowfall had left stranded dozens of goods carrying and passenger vehicles in the district’s Tajakan area. He said passengers were waiting for the highway’s reopening.
