KABUL (Pajhwok): Hundreds of university students on Saturday rallied against a blasphemous article published in a Kabul-based newspaper, asking relevant organs to award harsh punishment to the perpetrators.

A large number of students staged a protest in front of the Kabul University, chanting: “We don’t want democracy and its supporters; implementing democracy is an insult to Islam; long live our religion”.
Sharia Faculty student Mohammad Musa Rohani told Pajhwok Afghan News it was intolerable for Muslims to accept such insult. “We are ready to defend our religion even at the cost of our lives,” he pledged.
The newspaper should be banned and the individuals behind publishing the profane article severely punished, he demanded, asking the government not to let the perpetrators off the hook.
Dawat University Chancellor Mohammad Rizwan said it was not the first time that media had insulted Islam. He claimed there were some foreign circles behind the outrage.
The protestors issued a resolution, asking jihadi leaders and religious scholars to stand firm on the issue.
A day earlier, scores of residents held a protested meeting against the blasphemous article at the Eidgah Mosque in the capital. The protestors called for serious action against the newspaper and its contributor.
The English-language newspaper, Afghanistan Express, published an article by EG Ahwar with the headline “IS and Taliban”. The writer allegedly used insulting words against Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), the Quran and Allah.
The article has drawn strong condemnation from readers, civil society figures. CEO Abdullah has called the article against religious beliefs and promised the government would seriously investigate it.
