GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): Taliban insurgents stormed the house of a former mayor overnight, killing him along with a bodyguard in the Qarah Bagh district of southern Ghazni province, an official said on Saturday.

The former mayor during Taliban’s era and tribal elder, Abdul Qadir, had previous received death threats from his former comrades, who finally killed him last night in the Haronkhel area, the governor’s spokesman said.

Shafique Nang told Pajhwok Afghan News Abdul Qadir had survived a bomb attack on the third day of Eidul Azha, early last month.

The former official had been busy constructing culverts and paving streets in his area with government’s assistance before his murder.

Abdul Qadir was known as mayor because he served as mayor of Qarah Bagh district during Taliban’s rule.

Residents said Abdul Qadir had the plan to spearhead an uprising group against the Taliban.

A resident of the area, Mohammad Anwar, said the gunmen broke into Abdul Qadir’s house and shot him dead in his room.

The Taliban have so far said nothing about the assassination, the latest in a series of target killings in Ghazni of tribal elders and influential figures.
