AIBAK (Pajhwok): A truck driver was arrested with hundreds of kilograms of opium in Aibak, the capital of northern Samangan province, on Wednesday.

Samangan police chief Brig. Gen. Mohammad Akram Bekzad told Pajhwok Afghan News 385 kilograms of opium had been recovered from the Mazda pick-up.

He said the contraband was being smuggled from Baghlan to Balkh province, but police intercepted the truck on the basis of actionable intelligence in Rabatak area.

But the driver, Sher Alam, said he had no information about the opium concealed in the vehicle, which he was handed over to take to Balkh in return for 20,000 afs.

Gen. Bekzad said Samangan had been poppy-free over the past 10 years, with police doing their best to curb drug smuggling through the province.
