KABUL (Pajhwok): After signing a deal with his rival, presidential runner Dr. Abdullah Abdullah on Sunday expressed his willingness to accept results from the mid-runoff election.

Fazal Hussain Sancharak, speaking on behalf of the Reform and Unanimity team, told reporters in Kabul the agreement between the two candidates was aimed at bringing political legitimacy to the future of government. .

He promised his camp would recognise the Independent Election Commission’s decision. “Importantly, we have reached a consensus, a political consensus, on a national unity government. It is very important to us.”

Flanked by Ashraf Ghani’s representative Faiz Mohammad Zaki, Sancharak insisted the government of national unity was in the best interests of the nation and only way to break the political deadlock.

Meanwhile, the Ashraf Ghani camp asked the IEC to unveil the complete results. Mohammad Haleem Fidai, a member of the Change and Continuity team, claimed the commission was under pressure from UNAMA head Jan Kubis not to release details.

Fidai said Kubis had asked the IEC only to announce the winner and post the details to the commission’s website next week. “If the IEC accepts this request, it will mean a betrayal of the people of Afghanistan.” He feared under the influence of Kubis, the (IEC would just announce the winner without going into details.

The UNAMA office, meanwhile, said it had no knowledge of the matter. The mission would support the Afghans in their mutual deal about the election results, said Nazeef Salarzai, UNAMA spokesman.
