KABUL (Pajhwok): Some critics on Thursday said lawmakers’ decision to reject 10 ministers-designate was fair but others were opined the nominees’ rights had been violated.
President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani introduced a list of 25 ministers-designate and heads of two independent departments for a vote of confidence.
Of 18 nominees seeking vote of trust on Wednesday, the lower house approved seven ministers-designate and head of the NDS but refused to repose trust in 10 other choices.
Rahmatullah Nabil, Salahuddin Rabbani, Noor-ul-Haq Ulumi and Mohammad Eklil Hakimi were approved for the top posts of NDS, foreign, interior and finance ministries respectively.
Other nominees who were granted vote of trust were Ferozuddin Feroz, Sayed Hussein Almi Balkhi, Dawood Shah Saba and Naseer Ahmad Durrani for ministries of public health and religious affairs.
The 10 Ministers-designate who could not gain vote of trust included Mohammad Rahman Ughli, economy minister-designate, Khatera Afghan, higher education minister-designate, Zalmai Yunesi, education minister-designate, Barna Karimi, communications and IT minister-designate and Abbas Baseer, public works minister-designate
Sher Mohammad Karimi, defence minister-designate, Abdul Rahman Salahi, energy and water minister-designate, Sardar Mohammad Rahimi, commerce ministry Faizullah Zaki for transport and Qamaruddin Shinwari for borders and tribal affairs portfolios were also among the rejected candidates.
Wadid Safi, Kabul University professor, told Pajhwok Afghan News the lawmakers considered merit, professionalism and experience in voting for the nominees.
“What I witnessed in the last few days was that those who gained vote of trust had better programmes and plans. I think 70 percent of the MPs voted based on merit,” he added.
Those who were rejected, he said, had various issues of age, vision, and dual citizenship.
Professor Mohammad Amin Wakman was also of the opinion that Wolesi Jirga did not consider issues like ethnicity, language and political affiliation. “Although, the nominees were not professional enough, still the lawmakers voted only for those who had better plans.”
But, Qazi Mohammad Hassan Haqyar, a political commentator, without naming anybody, said there were competent individuals that the lawmakers did not approve.
Assadullah Zmrai also said those who could not win had no sound financial background.
