KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): A number of refugees gathered in front of the department concerned in southern Khost province Wednesday, demanding aid from the international community.

The refugees, who come daily to the department for registration in quest of assistance, said the little amount of aid they received could not meet their families’ needs.

One of them, Abdul Wali, told Pajhwok Afghan News that his family had been sleeping in a ruined house in Tanai district but no one had so far aided them.

“We lack food and only the person who has given us part of his house share his own food with us,” he added, asking the government and the donors to alleviate his plight.

Another refugee, Din Mohammad, said that they were in urgent need of aid and government should resolve their problems. “We are in need of so many things, including oil, flour, sugar and other essential materials.”

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Director Gul Habib Shah, who is also in charge of giving aid to refugees, said that they were still distributing assistance.

He added the current amount of aid could not solve the problem because the number of refugees was too high.

Provincial council head, Syed Karim Khaksar said that the refugees living in camps had received some aid but those who in villages yet to get relief.

He said the provincial council was trying to provide food, healthcare, education and other facilities to refugees.

“We ask the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), World (IOM) and others to continue to help refugees,” he concluded.
