KABUL on Wednesday passed by a majority vote a marriage bill banning big budget wedding parties and “un-Islamic traditions.”

The bill was tabled in the house by the Justice and Judicial Commission in four chapters and 23 articles.

Mohammad Obda, who heads the commission, said the measure had been drafted by lawmakers and it had many objectives.

He said the draft law banned traditions in marriages that were in conflict with Islamic teachings.

He said real Afghan cultural values had been considered in the bill which banned heavy costs on weddings, moral corruption and strengthened relations between husbands and their wives.

A majority of 134 MPs present voted in favour of the bill, which would be soon sent to the Meshrano Jirga (Senate) for approval.

The bill will become a law after it is signed by the president.
