KABUL (Pajhwok): Former president Hamid Karzai, referring to the current situation in the country, on Friday urged the people to support the incumbent government wholeheartedly.

At a gathering that commemorated the 20th death anniversary of Abdul Ali Mazari, Karzai said the Hezb-i-Wahdat Islami leader had sincerely struggled for justice and prosperity in the country.

The ex-president said: “The situation today is better today than five years ago and I hope the future will be a lot brighter.”

Condemning a recent sectarian attack in and the kidnapping of 31 people in Zabul province, he hoped the people would be able to achieve peace by forging unity in their ranks.

“The wave of violence in Afghanistan is a foreign conspiracy that we can defeat through unity and by standing firmly behind the government,” he said, drumming up support for the new administration.

In recent months, the national unity government has stepped efforts to bring peace and improve relations with neighbouring countries, especially Pakistan.
