LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): After the launch of the ongoing offensive — codenamed Zulfiqar– the dangerous Trikh Nawar locality of southern Helmand province has been purged of insurgents, a senior police commander claimed on Saturday.

Situated near Lashkargah, the provincial capital, the Trikh Nawar is widely regarded as a dangerous area. Sultan Mahmood Mahmood, commander of the 604th border police zone, said the month-long operation concluded on Friday night.

Mahmood said the area had been taken back from militants after eight years control as a result of the offensive, spearheaded by ANA. The region is situated 10 kilometres west of Lashkargah.

ANA had control of the locality to establish firm writ of the government. The offensive also triggered mass displacement of families and security forces are busy defusing mines planted in civilian homes.

Muhammad Karim, a resident of Trikh Nawar urged the government to establish permanent check-posts to maintain the security gains.

“We left our home three weeks ago and Taliban have since been in control of our area. We are unable to say anything against the militants,” he recalled.

“We haven’t seen a single peaceful day in the last eight years. Neither the government wants to uproot the militants once for all nor the Taliban are willing to leave us in peace,” had he added.
