KABUL Lawyers Association on Sunday warned of another electoral crisis if the government did not embark on much-needed reforms in the system.

Abdul Ghafoor Ghayur, the association’s head, told journalists in Kabul the unity government, despite many promises, had done nothing to reform the poll panels.

He alleged the government kept itself busy with other issues, ignoring reforms and preparations for the upcoming parliamentary elections, due before June 2015.

Gul Ahmad Madadzai, the association’s deputy head, said the government’s behaviour reflected its casual approach to elections.

“The main concern is that the entire system would become illegitimate. The cabinet is not complete, and if parliamentary polls are delayed, the Wolesi Jirga will also lose its legitimacy,” he warned.

The association also issued a statement, saying the government was deliberately wasting time. Six months have passed since the formation of the unity government, but no commission has been formed for the reforming poll panes.

It urged the government for electoral reforms because the current officials had lost their legitimacy due to their bad performance in last year’s presidential vote.

The association warned of civil disobedience if the government did not pay any attention to the request of civil society and people.
