KABUL (Pajhwok): The police chief for central Uruzgan province was killed in an overnight suicide bombing in the Dasht-i-Barchi locality of capital Kabul, a lawmaker said on Thursday.
Wolesi Jirga member Obaidullah Barakzai told Pajhwok Afghan News Brig. Gen. Matiullah was attacked in the limits of 6th police district. The body of Matiullah had been taken to his home province for funeral and burial, he said.
Kabul police chief Lt. Gen. Abdul Rahman Rahimi said two suicide bombers were killed by security forces late on Wednesday.
One of the suicide bombers detonated his explosive vest before he was gunned down. Rahimi said the bombers wanted to strike on the eve of Nawroz festival. He said there were no causalities in the blast.
The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the blasts, with the group’s spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid saying their fighters carried out the suicide attacks. However, he said nothing about casualties.
