KABUL (Pajhwok): At least seven people were killed and 36 others wounded in a suicide car bombing in the heart of Kabul on Wednesday, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) said.

The attack took place in the Murad Khani area of the 2nd police district at around 4:30 pm, MoI Spokesman Ghulam Siddique Siddiqui told Pajhwok Afghan News. Three policeman, as many children and four women were among the injured.

But Abdul Kabir Amiri, the director of Kabul hospitals, said that the injured — some in critical condition — had been evacuated to different medical facilities in the capital.

Amiri did not give identities of the victims, but said the injured were being treated at Jamhooriat, Emergency and Wazir Mohammad Akbar Khan Hospitals.

Meanwhile, President Ashraf Ghani denounced the suicide attack in strongest terms and expressed profound shock over loss of precious lives.

Ghani extended his condolences to the victims’ families and prayed for the quick recovery of the wounded. “It’s an inhuman and un-Islamic act by Afghanistan’s enemies, who don’t want the people to live a peaceful life.”

Giving an eyewitness account, resident Hashmatullah claimed seeing a number of wounded people taken in ambulances to hospital from the scene. A local police station was the apparent target.

Ministries of Finance, Defence Ministry, the presidential palace, a religious shrine and other offices are located in the neighbourhood.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast.
