TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): Thousands of residents of central Uruzgan provicne on Thursday staged a protest against government officials for their involvement in the killing of police cheif Matiullah Khan.

The protestors asked the government for arrest the perpetrators and bring them to justice as soon as possible. They warned of boycotting the upcoming parliamentary elections if the government failed to nab the killers.

Khan was killed in Kabul under mysterious circumstances on March 19. Initially, security officials said he had been killed in a suicide bombing, but investigations later revealed that he was shot dead.

Thousands of religious scholars, tribal elders, youth and women took part in the demonstration, shouting slogans against the government and warning of bigger protests in the days ahead.

Claiming government officials were involved in the assassination, the protestors asked President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Officer Abdullah to thoroughly investigate the incident.

One of the demonstrators, Maulvi Abul Rashid Mujaddedi said the police officer always tried his best to maintain security and let people live in peace. He mourned Khan’s assassination a big loss.
