To escape forced marriage, Herat girl commits suicide

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): A 21-year-old woman committed suicide by shooting herself dead in western Herat province, an official said on Monday.

Anahita was found dead in the 8^th police district of Herat City, the provincial capital, police spokesman Abdul Rauf Ahmadi told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said initial investigations suggested that Anahita took the extreme step after being forced by her family to marry against her choice.

Her father, an Afghan National Army (ANA) officer, and the man who was supposed to marry Anahita have been arrested.

An intelligence official, who wished anonymity, said the victim was an employee of a private television channel in Herat City.
