MAIMANA (Pajhwok): Two gunmen were killed when they stormed a police check post in northwestern Faryab province, an official said Thursday.
Abdul Jamil Sadiqui, the Qaisar district chief, said three gunmen opened fire on security forces on Wednesday night. Security official repulsed the attack leaving two assailants dead while the third one managed to escape.
The attackers, he said were thieves who wanted to snatch arms and other ammunition from the check post. A local wishing anonymity said the slain men had no links to militants.
Separately, a security official was killed during the exchange of gun fire in Sherin Tagab district, the town’s administrative chief said.
But Taliban Spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi claimed the slain individual was an Afghan Local Police (ALP) official. He said Taliban took his weapons with themselves.
