KABUL (Pajhwok): Interior Minister Noor-ul-Haq Ulumi on Thursday praised police officers but stressed the force was needed to demonstrate professionalism.

Speaking at a gathering of special police unit, he said security force rendered huge sacrifices to protect the nation and the country from anti-state elements.

He said the special unit of police was professionally trained and the government would ensure to provide them with latest equipments to thwart nefarious designs of enemy.

Ulumi said the government had been striving to fulfill the need of security forces. “Implementation of laws and maintenance of order were main tasks to be done by the police force. Police should not involve in corrupt practices,” he noted.

He said police officials who showed negligence in Farkhanda’s killing case had been referred to judiciary and the interior ministry would welcome the court decision in this connection.

An angry mob beat 27-year-old Farkhanda to death on March 18 before setting her body on fire. She was accused of burning a copy of the holy Quran and Religious Affairs.

At the end of the ceremony, Ulumi distributed appreciation certificates and cash prizes among officials of special police unit. The number of police officials reached to 160,000, including special units.
