Plot to bomb Ghazni ceremony thwarted

Apr 13, 2015 - 13:54

GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): National Directorate of Security (NDSinfo-icon) officials arrested three militants with huge explosives plotting to attack a planned ceremony in southern Ghazni province on Monday, the acting governor said.

Musa Khan Akbarzada said the miscreants wanted to carry out a sabotage act at a gathering marking the first anniversary of Ghazni City serving as the capital of Islamic Civilisation .

All arrangements were finalised for the event. Ghazni City was selected to serve as the Asian capital of the Islamic civilisation for 2013 by the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation at a conference held in Tripoli, Libya, in 2007.

To host the centre for Islamic Culture, a preparatory commission was established in 2007. Officials from ministries of finance, information and cultural affairs, rehabilitation and rural development, water and energy, urban development affairs and womeninfo-icon affairs are members of the commission.

Officials from other provinces such as Logar, Paktia and members of Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon, local elders and people had arrived to attend the gathering.
