Anomaly unearthed in political passports distribution

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Political passports that have some privileges for holders had been distributed illegally to undeserving people, head of the Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon defence and internal security commission revealed on Saturday.

In line with international norms, political passport could be issued after the signature of foreign minister. In addition, the documents of political passport applicant should be scrutinized by Consul Affairs Department of Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 

Members of parliament, military personnel above the rank of lieutenant general, diplomats stationed abroad, ministers, members of Supreme Court council, attorney generals, governors, mayors, secretaries, formers foreign ministers and some other high level government officials are eligible to get political passports.

Individual with political passports could be considered as ambassador of that particular county.

Salih Mohmmad Salih said a large number of people who did not meet the criteria had gotten illegally awarded political passports and miss used it which tarnished the image of the country.

Some members of parliament had also been found using political passports which should be cancelled, he said, adding that all political passports distributed illegally needed to be collected to prevent its illegal use.

The fact that common people possess political passport unearthed when Azerbaijan conveyed to the government of Afghanistaninfo-icon that a large number Afghans possessed political passports.

Hikmat Khalil Karzai, the foreign ministry secretary earlier confirmed that 4,650 political passports had illegally distributed among individuals in the previous years.

Sirajul Haq Siraj, deputy spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), said more than 4,000 political passports had been distributed in the last few years and pledged to cancel them with immediate effect.
