Ghani urges Iran to help protect environment

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani, who is in Iran on a two-day state visit, on Sunday urged Tehran to share its experience with Kabul in area of environmental protection.

The president arrived in Iran at the head of a high-level delegation, including deputy chief executive officer Haji Mohammad Mohaqqiq and some ministers.

Ghani and his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani agreed to share information on the situation in border areas between the two countries in order to curb militancy and drug smuggling.

The call from President Ghani for Iran’s assistance in dealing with environmentinfo-icon issues came at a meeting with Iranian Vice-President and head of the Environmental Protection Organisation, Masoumeh Ebtekar.

A statement from the Presidential Palace in Kabul said the two sides discussed cooperation in protecting natural environment.

The president cited the emergence of flash floods, deforestation, dying meadows and illegal hunting of wild animals as major threats to Afghanistaninfo-icon’s natural environment.

He urged Ebtekar to share her organisation’s experience with Afghanistan in protection of environment, saying that his government was trying to have the capacity to protect the country’s natural life.

The meeting stressed joint efforts at protecting natural environment in the two countries, the statement said.
