UN wants Daesh existence in Afghanistan verified

UN wants Daesh existence in Afghanistan verified

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The UN assistance mission (UNAMA) on Sunday said the presence of Islamic State or Daesh group in Afghanistaninfo-icon should be meticulously evaluated to ascertain if the same militants were committing violence with a different name.

Nicholas Haysom, the UN Secretary General Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of UNAMA, told journalists in Kabul that despite reports that Daesh had asserted responsibility for Saturday’s attack in Jalalabad, it was still necessary to evaluate whether it was really behind the attack.

He condemned the attack that killed and wounded dozens of people, saying, “Some sources say these are the same militants who now call themselves Daesh, but others have a different view.”

The suicide attack killed 34 people and injured more than 100. Minutes apart, another explosion also injured two persons at a shrine.

Shahidullah Shahid, who previously spoke for the Pakistani Talibaninfo-icon and now claims to be speaking for Daesh in Afghanistan, said the new group was behind the attack. He said many government officials were killed and wounded.

There have been conflicting reports about the existence of Daesh fighters in some provinces.

Haysom said the UN was deeply concerned about a possible further rise in violence in Afghanistan during the so-called spring offensive.

“In many cases such acts of violence against innocent people would result in crimes against humanity. We insist that those who commit such violence shall one day be held accountable,” he added.
