15 insurgents dead in Kunduz firefight

KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): Fifteen militants have been killed when heavy-armed insurgents mounted attacks on police check posts in northeastern Kunduz province, police spokesman said on Friday.

Sayed Sarwar Hussaini told Pajhwok Afghan News that Talibaninfo-icon stormed police check posts in Chagor Qashlaq locality in Khanabad district.

Soon after the attack, fresh reinforcements were sent in to the area and the ensuing battle left notorious militants’ commander Mullahinfo-icon Tofan dead among other rebels.

Hussain said the firefight lasted for hours, which took place close to Kunduz-Takhar Highway. Police inflicted heavy losses on enemy during the gun battle, he added.

He said another dreaded commander Qari Rahimuddin was among the dead while five other militants suffered injuries in the showdown.

Two policemen were also killed in the clash, he added. However, militants have not commented on the clash as of yet.

It merits mention that Taliban’s spring offensive codenamed Azm (Determination) would start from today’s (Friday) afternoon.
