KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Measles cases reached an alarming number of more than 445 in three months across Afghanistaninfo-icon, healthinfo-icon officials said on Sunday.

In a joint statement, the Ministry of Public Health, the Worldinfo-icon Health Organisation(WHO) and the UN’s Children Fund (UNICEF) said the current figures were alarming since only 581 cases had been recorded in Afghanistan throughout last year.

Deputy Public Health Minister Ahmad Jan Naeemi said linked the fast increasing cases of the highly infectious diseases to parents’ negligence in vaccinating their children.

He said the first round of an anti-measles vaccination campaign had started in some provinces and the second round would be launched May 25 in another 15 provinces.

According to Naeemi, polio vaccination campaigns would also start across the country on May 10.

A least 28 polio cases were registered in Laghman, Kunar, Nangarhar, Uruzgan, Khost, Farah, Paktika, Kandahar, Ghazni, Zabul and Helmand provinces last year.
