Abdullah vows reduced govt-people gap

May 02, 2015 - 21:17

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah on Saturday said the government could win over people’s hearts if it overcame the gap with the masses.

Abdullah was talking at the inauguration of a three-day conference on good governance here. The conference is organised by the Meshrano Jirgainfo-icon for provincial council members.

Various issues pertaining to the provincial council’s role in ensuring good governance will be discussed at the event after which the participants would draw up a draft suggesting powers and responsibilities of provincial council members.

The CEO said provincial council members were closer to people and the government would support their right to observe and evaluate local governance.

“During election campaign, we had told the people to empower us so in return we can empower them. Our support for local representatives will continue,” Abdullah said.

He said the government could overcome challenges if it had public support and in this regard, provincial councils were an appropriate channel.
